Recently, I was reading a book in English and I came across the phrase:

“How easy that lie comes to your lips.”

And I thought to myself, I wonder how you say that in Japanese?

I know how to say,  “You are a liar.”  or “You often lie.”  But I wondered if there was a better, more natural way to say it.

Usually, for my English learning students, I suggest they expose themeselves to natual english as much as possible.  You can do that through TV, movies, music, books and of course speaking with natives.

That is the best way to find out how native speakers talk. (I often find English language learning books written by Japanese for Japanese to contain many errors and unnatual English).

However, it is also usuful to think “How could I say this in the target language?”, which is what i did.

So I researhed, and what I came up with was:

平気で嘘をつく
平気な顔をして嘘をつく
ペラペラ嘘をつく

Now the question you might be asking yourself is “when would I ever use that phrase?”

Well, I can tell you, I used it right away the other day in the classroom.  

A student told me, “I feel like I am not making any progress in English.”

I said, “You should review your English Lessons everyday, for at least 15 minutes.  Do you do that?”

She hesitated, then said, “Yes, of course!”

And I said, “How easy that lie comes to your lips.”

Just kidding, that didn’t really happen! But I am sure you can find some situations where you could use this phrase and it comes off as a joke!  (Do be careful thougth, its best if the person you say it to knows you and your sense of humor!)

最近のことですが、英語で書かれた本を読んでいて、次のフレーズに出会いました。

“How easy that lie comes to your lips.”

そして「日本語では何て言うんだろう？」とふと思いました。

「あなたは嘘つきだ」（You are a liar）とか、「あなたはよく嘘をつく」（You often lie）とかの言い方は知っています。でも、もっとピタッとくる、自然な言いまわしはないものかとあれこれ考えたんです。

いつも私は英語を学んでいる生徒さんたちに、できるだけ自然な英語に触れるよう勧めています。それはテレビや映画・音楽・本、それにもちろんネイティブスピーカーと話すことをとおして実行できます。

ネイティブスピーカーがどのように話すかを知るためには、それが最善の方法なんです。（よく気づくことですが、日本人が日本人のために書いた英語の教科書にはまちがいや不自然な英語がたくさん載っています）。

とはいえ、私がやったように、「目標言語（target language）でこれはどう言えばいいんだろう」と考えるのも役に立つことです。

そこで調べてみたら、こういう表現が見つかりました。

平気で嘘をつく　
平気な顔をして嘘をつく
ペラペラ嘘をつく

でもなかには「だけどそんなフレーズ、実際に使う機会があるのかな」と首をかしげている人もいるかもしれませんね。

実はワタクシ、このあいださっそく教室で使ったんですよ。ある生徒さんにこう質問されたときのことです。

Aさん：”I feel like I am not making any progress in English.” (私の英語、ぜんぜん上達していないように思うんですけど。)

マーシャル：”You should review your English Lessons everyday, for at least 15 minutes. Do you do that? （英語のレッスンを毎日最低15分は復習しなければなりませんよ。実行していますか？）

Aさんはちょっとためらってから答えました。”Yes, of course.”（はい、もちろんです。）

そこで私はこう言ったんです。“How easy that lie comes to your lips!”（よくも平気な顔をしてそんなうそがつけますね！）

あ、これ冗談ですよ〜。そんなこと、実際には起こりませんでした！だけど、このフレーズをジョークとして使えるような場面がきっと見つかるんじゃないかと思います。（ただし気をつけてくださいね。一番いいのは、このフレーズを使う相手があなたとあなたのユーモアのセンスをよく理解している場合です:）
