Don't use the word 'holiday'

Check the conversation below:

日本人 : I had a holiday today!

ネイティブ : Where did you go?

日本人 : What do you mean?

ネイティブ : Did you take a daytrip?

What happened in this conversation? The native speaker things that the Japanese person is taking a 旅行. In English 'holiday' means the same as 'trip'. 

For 休み・有給・年休 native speakers call this a 'day off'. 

Let's try the conversation again. 

日本人 : I had a day off today!

ネイティブ : Cool! What did you do?

日本人 : I had lunch at a cafe and went to the park.

ネイティブ : Nice!

Day Off

A day off can be any day you aren't working.

• Weekends (週末) are days off.
• Paid leave (有給・年休) are days off. 
• Public holidays (祝日) are days off.

連休

For many days off in a row (ずらり), English speakers feel like the weekend has been extended (延長された). 

So when there are many days off in a row, it is called a long weekend. 

For example, this week! Friday Februrary 11 is a public holiday, so the weekend is longer. This weekend is a long weekend.
